Evan Ziporyn
Evan Ziporyn (* 1959 in Evanston near Chicago , Illinois ) is an American composer and clarinetist .

Ziporyn, who began composing in his school days, studied composition at the Eastman School of Music with Joseph Schwantner and at Yale University with Robert Moore , David Lewin and Martin Bresnick . He also took piano lessons from Christopher Oldfather and clarinet lessons from Keith Wilson . He played free jazz and improvisational music and in the summer of 1980 he played with Wayan Suweca and Michael Tenzer in the gamelan ensemble Gamelan Sekar Jaya .
In 1981 he traveled to Bali, where he studied wayang music with Wayan Suweca and percussion with I Madé Lebah . Upon his return he continued his studies at the University of California at Berkeley with Gerard Grisey and Andrew Imbrie . With a Fulbright scholarship he studied in Bali with I Wayan Loceng in 1987 . He also worked with the Ensemble Sekar Jaya , whose artistic director he became in 1989, and participated in the performance of works by contemporary composers such as Louis Andriessen , Morton Feldman , Michael Gordon , David Lang , Steve Reich and Julia Wolfe .
In 1992 he was one of the founding members of the Bang on a Can All-stars . He played world premieres with the group, which performed with musicians such as Nik Bärtsch , Iva Bittová , Don Byron , Bryce Dessner , Brian Eno , Philip Glass , Meredith Monk , Kyaw-kyaw Naing , Terry Riley , Cecil Taylor , Henry Threadgill and Wu Man of more than a hundred works by contemporary composers, including Ornette Coleman , Ralph Shapey , Tan Dun and Thurston Moore . In 2005 the All Stars were named "Ensemble of the Year" by Musical America magazine .
In 1996 he recorded Steve Reich's New York Counterpoint , and in 1998 he worked on Reich's Ensemble's Grammy- winning album Music for 18 Musicians . In 2001 his solo album This Is Not a Clarinet was released . He received composition commissions a. a. by Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Project , the Kronos Quartet , the Orkest De Volharding , Maya Beiser and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project , with whom he recorded the CD Frog's Eye in 2006 .
Ziporyn has been teaching at MIT since 1990 , where he founded the Gamelan Galak Tika student ensemble in 1993 . He is the Kenan Sahin Distinguished Professor of Music at MIT.
In 2004 Ziporyn received a Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters , and in 2007 the USA Artists Walker Award . His wife is the composer Christine Southworth , they have been living together in Lexington (Massachusetts) for a few years .
