In 2005 there were clashes between local smallholders and nomads who moved to southern regions due to the persistent drought in the north and whose cattle grazed on the farmers' arable land. Protest marches were particularly spectacular by women who - completely naked (the nudity of women in this context means a curse) - marched into the city by the thousands and then blocked the local administration buildings for weeks.
