Wynkyn de Worde , in various sources also Winandus van Worden , John or Johannes Wynkyn or Wykyn , Wynkyn Vort or William Wykyn († 1535 in London ) was an English printer .

Life

It is believed that De Worde came from Woerth in Alsace . He was the assistant to the first English printer, William Caxton , with whom he worked in Westminster from 1477 . Presumably he came to England with or shortly after Caxton. After his death († 1491), De Worde brought out more than 800 titles in 45 years as his successor and moved his printing company from Westminster to London's Fleet Street in 1500 . He was the first Englishman to print music and italics . De Worde also brought out many school books, such as the grammars of John Colet , Erasmus of Rotterdam and William Lilly .
