history

Castle and place Helfenberg in the Kieser forest map from 1685

The name Helfenberg goes on today existing only as a ruin, in the time of Staufer built castle Helfenberg and became 1259 first mentioned. The place at the southern foot of the mountain was initially called Finkenbach and was probably named after the original mansion on the mountain in the course of the construction of a second mansion in the village around 1600. The place was with both castles as a Württemberg fiefdom in the possession of different noble families and shares the history of its castles and their owners. The entire rule of Helfenberg came in 1746 to the von Gaisberg family , who came from the Rems Valley , from the knightly canton of Kocher , to which Helfenberg belonged until 1806. The castle on the mountain was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and quickly fell into disrepair after its restoration, whereas the baron family lived in the lower castle in the center of the village.

After the repeal of the imperial knighthood, Helfenberg came to the Württemberg community of Auenstein , but the baron family continued to be a determining factor in the place. Titles and validity were not replaced until 1850. Around 1900 Gaisberg's real estate comprised 216 acres. The estate was administered from 1906 by Marie Freiin von Gemmingen-Guttenberg (1867–1950), the widow of Hans Ulrich Freiherr von Gaisberg and granddaughter of Johann Friedrich Cotta . The palace and estate as well as 19 other buildings in the village were destroyed in a bomb attack in April 1945. The parish hall was later built on the site of the castle, and a new building area was developed in the former castle garden.

With Auenstein , which merged with Ilsfeld on December 31, 1973, the place became a new municipality of Ilsfeld. In 2006, Helfenberg had a total of 257 inhabitants.
