The Sargasso triggerfish ( Xanthichthys ringens ) is a species of the triggerfish family (Balistidae).
distribution
It lives in the western Atlantic from the coast of North Carolina via Bermuda and the Lesser Antilles to the coast of Brazil on outer reefs , at depths of 30 to 100 meters. Young fish live under floating Sargassum rods .
Labelling
The three cheek strips from the mouth to the gill openings and numerous dark points, which are arranged in rows along the flanks, are the hallmarks of the fish, which can be up to 25 centimeters long. Like all species in the genus Xanthichthys , the Sargasso triggerfish has a protruding chin. It feeds mainly on crustaceans and sea urchins .
