List of grape varieties

Xarel lo is a white wine from Catalonia . Their main growing area is there in the DO Penedès . It is widely used in the DO Alella under the name Pansa Blanca . Other areas worth mentioning are in Aragon and the Balearic Islands . Xarel lo is cultivated on a total of 9800 ha (1999). In the DO Alella there is also a red variant with the name Pansa Rosado or Pansa Vermella . In Catalonia, it is used with the two varieties Parellada and Macabeo as the basis for the sparkling wine Cava .

The grape variety ripens early and has a predominantly vegetal aroma similar to white cabbage. The wines show a lot of body and a good acid structure , but also a rustic character. Since the 1990s, more and more varietal white wines have been made from it . These are characterized by their golden yellow color and fullness. Wines from Xarel lo are also suitable for aging in barriques .

There is a presumption that Xarel lo is identical to Avesso from the northern Portuguese wine-growing region Vinho Verde . This also applies to the grape variety Doradillo , which is used in Australia and South Africa as a synonym for Jaén Blanco . It probably comes from Spain, but is no longer grown there under this name. From Doradillo are mainly table wines and base wines for distillation produced.
