Xaver Joseph Nessel (born February 20, 1834 in Haguenau ; † February 5, 1918 there ) was mayor of Hagenau, archaeologist and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

Nessel attended high schools in Haguenau and Strasbourg and the universities of Strasbourg and Paris , where he studied law for four years and then graduated as a licentiate . He was particularly fond of Alsatian history and archeology. Nessel was a member of the municipal council in Haguenau since 1860 and mayor of the same city from 1870 to 1902. The city owes him important buildings (school, barracks) and parks, the Lycee Professionel Xavier Nessel is named after him. Nessel's most important legacy is the historical museum of the city of Haguenau ( Musée historique de la ville de Haguenau ), which he inspired and was built between 1900 and 1905 , the magnificent building of which also houses the city archive. The basis of the nationally important department of prehistoric and Roman archeology was formed by Nessel's own finds in the area, made since 1871, such as the Seltzer barrows .

In 1878 he was elected to the regional committee of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine . He was a member of the regional committee as a representative of the Lower Alsace District Assembly until 1887.

From 1877 to 1878 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the constituency Alsace-Lorraine 10 (Haguenau, Weißenburg ) and the Alsatian protest party.
