On Thursday July 21, 2005, a dam broke in southwest China . The accident happened in the early hours of the morning at 6:20 AM at Xiaocaoba and Daqiao near the city of Zhaotong in the circle Yiliang , province of Yunnan . The water then flooded three villages, including Xiaocaoba and Daqiao, killing 16 people, eight of them children. 23 people were injured. 15 to 19 houses were destroyed by the tsunami and 40 hectares of farmland flooded. A total of 150 people were affected. The amount of damage is stated as 4.64 million yuan (US $ 560,000). The local party committee deployed 500 people to the rescue work.

In southwest China, the rainy season began at the beginning of June . The 80,000 m³ reservoir had been filled by heavy rainfall during the previous day. Serious construction errors of the illegally and without permission erected building are said to have caused the dam to break , as initial investigations have shown.
