Xiaoyi

Xiaoyi ( 孝义 市 , Xiàoyì Shì ) is a Chinese urban district that belongs to the administrative area of ​​the district-free city of Lüliang in the west of Shanxi Province . It has an area of ​​948 km² and has about 430,000 inhabitants.

During the spring and autumn annals of 594 BC Xiaoyi was founded under the name "Guayang". During the period of the Three Kingdoms and the Northern Wei was renamed "Zhongyang". The city was last renamed "Xiaoyi" in 627, after the name of Emperor Tang Taizong .

The area around Xiaoyi is known for its rich deposits of mineral raw materials such as coal, iron ore and bauxite. Due to several coking plants, Xiaoyi is one of the places with the worst air quality in China.

Typical for Xiaoyi are also the cultivation of walnuts and - as a cultural specialty - the shadow theater .

The Zhongyang Building (Zhongyang lou 中 阳 楼) is on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China .
