Xiphophorus is a genus of viviparous toothcarps . The fish are found on the Atlantic side of southern North America ( Mexico ) and Central America from Coahuila to Honduras . The name Xiphophorus is the Latinized form of the combination of the two Greek words xiphos (sword) and phorein (to carry). Originally the genus only consisted of species whose males carry a sword-like appendage on the lower caudal fin, the most famous representative of which is also known as the swordtail ( Xiphophorus hellerii ). However, later research indicated that at that time (also referred to as subgenus) under the generic name Platypoecilus out Platys are so closely related to the sword-makers that they must be attributed to the same genus.

features

Xiphophorus species reach lengths between 3.5 cm (males of Xiphophorus continens ) and 16 cm (females of Xiphophorus hellerii ). They are strongly built, elongated to squat fish. There is a clear gender dimorphism . The females of all species are significantly larger than the males.

Way of life

Xiphophorus species mostly live in flowing waters from mountain streams to the estuaries, as well as in lakes, swamps and lagoons. Brackish water is avoided. They feed on invertebrates and vegetable foods.

Aquaristics

With the swordtail , the platy and the parrot the genus represents three very widespread freshwater ornamental fish, of which numerous colored cultivated forms were created.

Trivia

The Xiph.Org Foundation (and its predecessor, the Xiphophorus company), a non-profit organization for the development of free multimedia formats, protocols and standards, was named after the genus Xiphophorus .
