Xiphophorus kallmani is a freshwater fish of the family of viviparous tooth-carps . It is closely related to the common swordtail ( Xiphophorus hellerii ). The species was first scientifically described in 2003. The specific epithet was given in honor of the ichthyologist Klaus D. Kallman .
features
It is a large representative of the genus Xiphophorus , the fish reach a standard length of 8.5 cm. The basic body color is gray-brown in both sexes, and brass-yellow in the lower half of the body. There are one to four dark red horizontal stripes on the sides, with the stripe along the middle of the body very distinct. The fins are mostly colorless, only in the dorsal fin there are two rows of brownish-red points. The male sword is colored golden yellow and edged with black. In sexually active males, the pectoral and pelvic fins and the gonopodium are orange-yellow in color.
Occurrence and way of life

Xiphophorus kallmani is endemic to Lake Catemaco . The lake is surrounded by mountains at an altitude of 340 m in the Mexican state of Veracruz . The swordtail occurs there together with some other viviparous toothcarps that are also endemic to the lake: Xiphophorus milleri , Poecilia catemaconis , Poeciliopsis catemaco and Heterandria tuxtlaensis . Other fish species found there are Astyanax fasciatus , Cichlasoma fenestratum , Rhamdia guatemalensis and Dorosoma petenense .

The species is part of the group of the southern swordtail, which includes the following species in addition to Xiphophorus kallmani :
