Drawing from the first description

The Montezuma swordtail ( Xiphophorus montezumae ) is a live -bearing freshwater fish from the order Cyprinodontiformes , family Poeciliidae , and genus Xiphophorus . It is the genus to which the platy and the colloquially general swordtail belong. Xiphophorus translated from Greek means swordtail.

description

With a maximum size of 7.5 cm, the females are physically larger than the males. The genus Xiphophorus is a common companion in freshwater aquariums . The males of this particular species are known for their metallic green scales and the fact that their "sword" remains horizontal, unlike most species where it is angled downward.

The best water conditions are water temperatures of 21-25 ° C with a pH value close to 7.5. They come from the Pánuco River Basin in northeast Mexico in the states of Tamaulipas , San Luis Potosi and Veracruz . They are often found in fast-flowing, oxygen-rich waters. In the wild they swim in larger schools or schools. Swordtails are livebearers. As the name suggests, they are ovoviviparous , which means that they do not lay eggs, but rather give birth to their offspring alive. Mating takes place accordingly with internal fertilization. As with almost all swordtail species, hybridizations with other Xiphophorus species occur.
