Roosevelt's Anolis ( Anolis roosevelti , Syn .: Xiphosurus roosevelti ) is an extremely rare or already extinct species of lizard from the genus Anolis .
description
Roosevelt's anolis was first described in 1931 by the American zoologist Chapman Grant , grandson of former US President Ulysses S. Grant . It was named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt . It is endemic to Culebra , an island that belongs to Puerto Rico . Here he lives in wooded areas on the slopes of Monte Resaca.
It becomes up to 160 mm long. The basic color is brownish-gray, which becomes yellowish-brown towards the tail. It is whitish on the underside of the abdomen. The wattles are gray on the top and yellowish on the underside. The eyelids are yellow. Another characteristic are two long lines on either side of the body, one of which starts at the ear and the other at the shoulder.
Danger
Although it has only been seen once since its discovery in 1932, there have been unconfirmed sightings since 1973 and some experts believe it still exists today. He prefers to stay on balsam trees (gumbo limbo) and on fan palms, on whose fruits he feeds. Its habitat has been severely damaged due to human activity through the building of settlements. Few examples of Roosevelt's anole can be found in museums and it has been on the United States' Endangered Species List since 1977.
