history
The band was founded in 2011 by singer Ronald Röttel and guitarist Marin Geier after they met in a Cologne club. After a short time, drummer Tim Gorinski joined the band, which from then on called itself Xul Zolar, after the Argentine painter Xul Solar . In this constellation, the band played their first concerts, including in the opening act for Future Islands .
In 2012, a first vinyl single was released through self-distribution. In addition, the band took third place in the Pop-NRW Prize, which was awarded for the first time this year. The band then went to the studio with Cologne producers Jochen Naaf and Sven Ludwig to record the single Hex , which was also released on vinyl in 2013.
This was followed by appearances at well-known festivals such as the MS Dockville , the Immergut Festival , the Reeperbahn Festival and others.
In 2015 the band released the EP Tides on the label Asmara Records, which was founded together with their management , which in turn was produced by Jochen Naaf and Sven Ludwig and received good reviews. For example, Daniel Ibald gave 6 out of 6 points in his review on Tonspion of the EP and compared the band's music with that of Talking Heads or Yeasayer .
The release of the tour was followed by several concerts in France, Switzerland and Italy in the opening act of the Belgian band Balthazar .
In January 2018 the band released their debut album Fear Talk , again via Asmara Records and distributed by Rough Trade , which was very well received by the press. Philipp Kressman calls the album “an almost too perfect debut album” in his review for Spex magazine and draws comparisons to Phil Collins or the Pet Shop Boys , while Daniel Gerhardt temporarily online the music of Fear Talk in the tradition of British musicians Jai Paul located.
The album was produced by Marvin Horsch from Cologne and mixed by Jan-Philipp Janzen (drummer of the band Von Spar ) and Marius Bubat. The cover shows a photograph of a work of art by Andreas Gursky student Peter Causemann from Düsseldorf .
In September 2019 the band released an EP called Nightfalls and then went on tour through Germany and Switzerland. The single Your Ways was released on the French label Kitsuné .
