Xwla (also: Phla , Gbe, Western-Xwla , Xwla-Gbe ) is the language of the Hwla people of the same name .
Xwla is one of the Kwa languages .
According to one source, the Hwla only live in Togo with 24,000 speakers, and according to another source also in Benin . It is assumed that there are around 71,000 speakers for the Xwla. In Benin, Xwla speak about 50,000 people (2002), in Togo about 21,000.
In Togo, the Xwla speakers live in the southeastern part of the country on the Mono River. As far as sources go out from Xwla speakers in Benin, these sources give the southern part of Benin on the western border of the province of Mono in the sub-prefecture of Grand-Popo, in the province of Atlantique in the sub-prefecture of Ouidali and finally in the province of Littoral .
