Xysticus kochi is a species of spider fromthe crab spider family (Thomisidae). The species iswidespread and commonin Central Europe .
features
The species is one of the medium-sized crab spiders. Males have a body length of 4 to 5 mm, females reach 6–8 mm. Like many crab spiders, the species shows a clear sexual dimorphism in terms of color and pattern. Males are drawn in high contrast. The front body ( prosoma ) is blackish brown on the sides. In the middle there is a wide, light beige longitudinal band that shows a dark ocher-colored spot that is wide at the front and tapering towards the back, i.e. roughly V-shaped. This pointed spot usually extends to the back of the body. The rear body ( opisthosoma ) is dark brown on the sides, similar to the prosoma, and shows a broad, beige-colored longitudinal band in the middle, but the dark brown of the sides is still segmented by light beige transverse bands. Thighs and knees are also dark blackish brown, the other legs are clearly set off from it, predominantly light beige.
Females are very variable. The pattern is similar to that of the male, but the color is usually lighter and, including the legs, much more monochrome beige, sand-colored or reddish-brown, whereby the prosoma and opisthosoma can have the same or a different basic color.
In Central Europe there are a number of very similar species of the genus; the reliable determination of the species is therefore only possible through a macroscopic examination of the genital organs (genital morphological).
distribution and habitat
Xysticus kochi colonizes the western Palearctic from Great Britain and Portugal to Central Asia and in a north-south direction from Scandinavia to North Africa . The distribution area includes the temperate to Mediterranean zone. It occurs throughout Europe with the exception of Ireland and Iceland . The species loves warmth and lives on dry sandy grasslands with sparse vegetation. She stays there on the ground and on the low vegetation.
Danger
The species is widespread and common in suitable habitats. In Germany it is classified as "safe" in the Red List .
