Yadkin River near Elkin, North Carolina

The Yadkin River is 700 kilometers long, one of the longest rivers in the state of North Carolina and the neighboring state of South Carolina in the United States of America. Its source is in the northwestern part of the state near Thunder Hill Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway . Many sections of the river are dammed by dams as reservoirs , for energy supply or for flood control. After the tributary of the Uwharrie River , the Yadkin becomes the Pee Dee River . Near Cheraw , the river flows roughly at its fall line onto the state of South Carolina and is called the Great Pee Dee River from there .

Moravian settlers from Bethlehem Pennsylvania settled on the upper reaches of the river and founded the Wachovia colony in 1753 . From then until the Revolutionary War , thousands of Pennsylvania settlers came to the area, most of them via the Great Wagon Road . Most of these immigrants were of German or Scottish - Irish descent.

The river is mainly used as a recreational area, in spring and early summer sunfish (Centrarchidae) and various perch species are fished, kayaking and rafting are also possible. Part of the river flows through Pilot Mountain State Park , Morrow Mountain State Park and Uwharrie National Forest lie on the banks of the river at the junction of the Yadkin and the Pee Dee River.

W. Kerr Scott Dam

The main tributaries of the Yadkin River are the Reddies , Roaring , Mitchell , Fisher , Ararat, and the South Yadkin River . Many of the dams on the river create large reservoirs, some of which are W. Kerr Scott Reservoir , High Rock Lake , Tuckertown Reservoir , Badin Lake , Lake Tillery, and Blewitt Falls Lake . Many North and South Carolina communities get their water from the Yadkin-Pee Dee, and water distribution is a contentious issue during dry years.

Yadkin County and the administrative seat of the county, the place Yadkinville are named after the river.
