Kathy Yaeji Lee (born August 6, 1993 in Flushing , Queens , New York City ), known as Yaeji , is an American - Korean DJ and producer in the field of electronic music . Her style mixes house and hip-hop with gentle singing in English and Korean.

biography

Yaeji was born in Flushing to a Korean family who moved frequently. She spent a large part of her school time in South Korea, partly also in Japan. She stayed in touch with friends via the Internet, where she discovered her love for music.

Yaeji studied Conceptual Art , East Asian Studies and Graphic Design at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh . On the side she started to work as a DJ at house parties. In 2015 she finished her studies.

After graduating, Yaeji moved back to New York to devote himself to music and work in clubs. She released songs on SoundCloud before her first singles New York '93 - the year she was born - and Guap - originally by DJ Mall Grab - were released in 2016 .

In 2017 their first EP Yaeji came out. In the same year she became known to a wider audience after her first boiler room session.

A number of singles followed and the second EP, simply named EP2 . In November 2017, Yaeji appeared on the BBC's Sound of 2018 list . In 2018 she performed at the Coachella Festival . In 2020 the mixtape What We Drew 우리 가 그려 왔 came out.
