Yahata ( Jap. 八幡市 -shi ) was until 1963 an independent city ( - shi ) in the southern Japanese prefecture (ken) Fukuoka in northern Kyushu (formerly Kita-Kyushu , but today are used for uniqueness mostly Hokubu-Kyushu , " Northern part [of] Kyushu ”). In 1963, it merged with the cities of Kokura, Moji, Wakamatsu, and Tobata to form the city of North Kyushu (Japanese Kitakyushu- shi ). After Kitakyūshū became a designated city , the districts ( - ku ) Yahata-West and Yahata-East ( 八 幡 西区 Yahata-Nishi-ku and 八 幡 東区 Yahata-Higashi-ku ) emerged there as today's indirect successors of Yahata.

In written Japanese there has been an eponymous 八 幡 市 in Kyōto prefecture since 1977 , which reads however や わ た し Yawata -shi .

history

Yahata originated in 1889 as Yahata- mura ( 八幡村 ) from the three pre-modern villages Ogura, Ōkura and Edamitsu ( 尾倉村 , 大蔵村 , 枝光村 ) in the district (-gun) Onga Fukuoka; then from 1899 to 1917 it was known as Yahata- machi ( 八 幡 町 ) city. In 1917, Yahata became the 70th city in Japan to become -shi . In 1926 the city of Kurosaki ( 黒 崎 町 ) was incorporated, in 1937 the village of Kōjaku ( 上 津 役 村 ), in 1944 the city of Orio ( 折 尾 町 ), in 1955 the cities of Katsuki ( 香 月 町 ) and Koyanose ( 木屋 瀬 町 ).

In the Edo period , the entire Onga-gun, like large parts of the province of Chikuzen, belonged to the Principality (-han) of Fukuoka , which became a prefecture in the Meiji Restoration in 1871 with the abolition of the principalities and then through the first wave of prefectural fusions in 1871 / 72 was cleared of ex- and enclaves and extended to the entire province and parts of the neighboring provinces.
