Yahk is a place with 140 inhabitants (2011) in the Canadian province of British Columbia . It is located on the Moyie River near the Idaho border , 65 km southwest of Cranbook and 40 km east of Creston .
history
In prehistoric times, the area was an important crossing point where the Salish migrating from the south met the Kootenay traveling on the Goat River . The Dewdney Trail was laid out along this river in 1865 .
The modern era began with the establishment of the Crowsnest Pass Railway (part of the Canadian Pacific Railway ) in 1898. A large CPR warehouse for the manufacture of railway sleepers was set up nearby, and the population was about 3,000 in the early 20th century. After the closure in 1931, the economy relied on logging , some sawmills, and the production of wooden posts, but to a far lesser extent since the 1960s. Yahk also benefits from its location near the intersection of two highways, one of which leads to a border crossing into the United States .
