Yan Maresz

Yan Maresz (* 1966 in Monaco ) is a French composer.

Maresz studied piano and drums at the Monte-Carlo Music Academy. He also learned to play the guitar by himself and in 1983 became the only student of John McLaughlin . From 1984 to 1986 he studied jazz music at Berklee College of Music in Boston , then until 1992 composition with David Diamond and Milton Babitt at the Juilliard School of Music . In 1994 he attended the composition and computer music course program under Tristan Murail at IRCAM .

Maresz received u. a. the Rossini Prize of the Paris Academy of Fine Arts (1992) and the Hervé Dugardin Prize (1994). He was artist in residence at the Académie de France at the Villa Medici in Rome and composer in residence at the Strasburg Conservatory (2003-04). Since 1997 he has been a visiting professor and composer at IRCAM. He also teaches as a visiting professor at McGill University in Montreal and gives master classes in Europe and the USA. Since 1999 he has also worked as an instrumentator and arranger for McLaughlin.
