Yasmine Hamdan ( Arabic ياسمين حمدان; * 1976 in Beirut ) is a Lebanese singer , songwriter and actress . She founded the Middle East's first independent band ( Soapkills ) and through them first became known as the “underground icon of Lebanon” and then throughout the Arab world. Her collaboration with the Madonna producer Mirwais under the name YAS and with the weird folk sisters of CocoRosie brought her recognition in Europe and the USA.
life and work
Due to the civil war , Yasmine Hamdan spent the first 15 years of her life with siblings and parents between Beirut, Kuwait , Abu Dhabi and Greece . After her return, she founded the band Soap Kills with Zaid Hamdan while still at school in October 1997 . The name was a sarcastic allusion to how the Lebanese tried to "wash away" the bloody past. Yasmine Hamdan sang and wrote the songs in English and Arabic at the time. With trip-hop , electronic rhythms and traditional Arabic sounds, she generated a new genre. Yasmine Hamdan replaces the very strict, technical standards of Arabic singing with emotions, which she conveys through content, various Arabic dialects and, last but not least, in her performance.
She was particularly fond of the traditional Arabic songs of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. She does not see any separation between “western music” and the Arabic music with which she grew up. She was particularly inspired by artists like Asmahan and Aisha Al Marta. With her music, Yasmine Hamdan tries to revive tradition, but at the same time to question it. Quote: “On the other hand, I realized what I like about the culture that has shaped me: the humor, the mischievous, the sensual and cheerful that is expressed in it and at the same time hidden behind a veil of metaphors. To say something and not to say at the same time, that is very Arabic! "
Yasmine Hamdan has a degree in psychology, has taken courses in classical Arabic singing, plays the guitar and is proficient in Arabic dance. She lives in Paris with her husband, the Palestinian filmmaker Elia Suleiman .
