Yasni is a people search engine operated by Yasni GmbH. It aggregates search results from external sources and is therefore a meta search engine .

Origin and development

Yasni GmbH was founded in 2007 by Steffen Rühl, Christian Rühl and Robert Ziesche. The online offer started in the same year. In 2008 the Mountain Business Angels under Cornelius Boersch joined as an investor group, whereupon Yasni expanded and developed further country versions.

The website is available in 15 languages and on 21 country domains - the most recent offer (as of 2012) is "yasni.pl" for Poland.

The site zensierte-namen.de operated by Yasni has been closed since August 31, 2018 at the latest.

features

In addition to the simple search, there is the possibility of having newly found search results sent to you regularly in the form of an e-mail newsletter or of actively placing search ads. Yasni enables registered users to create profiles (with Yasni "Exposés") and thereby clearly assign the search results found in namesakes. Yasni also allows you to distinguish yourself from namesakes through extended options, such as adding your own links, text or images or creating a business card. In this context, Yasni also offers users the common communication and networking options of a social network . Here (Yasni.de) apparently a number of users communicate and thus collect hierarchy points, but the network has no topics in terms of content and is therefore arbitrary or banal.

use

According to an AGOF study, yasni.de was ranked 29th among German Internet offers in May 2011. IVW figures show Yasni around 22 million visits per month (as of July 2011). For June 2016, IVW yasni.de recorded 237,459 "total online visits". As of February 2019, Yasni is no longer listed on IVW (online offer).

context

The importance of Yasni as a meta search engine is proven by the number of clicks. These click numbers have to be assessed in their context in several ways:

  1. The figures from the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Online Forschung e. V. "are criticized for portraying the market in a distorted way . For example, several websites with the highest number of visitors (such as Google, Facebook, Youtube and Wikipedia) are not even mentioned in the AGOF studies.
  2. The numbers of the "Information community for the determination of the spread of advertising media e. V. “are purely interest-oriented statistics (distribution of advertising) and not numbers about the usage behavior of a meta search engine.
  3. The published figures always only indicate the pure query quantities without further differentiating. It will u. a. No distinction is made between automated queries (example: web crawler ) or one-time clicks (example: a user happens to come to Yasni and immediately closes the page) - therefore, no evidence of sustainable use can be provided based on the available figures.
  4. Analysis of the published figures also suggests that Yasni’s business model consists in attracting as many page views ("clicks") as possible ( content farm ) through search engine optimization .

criticism

The criticism of Yasni relates primarily to the search engine area, which is rated as questionable in terms of data protection law, since search results (although publicly visible) are merged in a dossier-like overview (see also the section "Data protection & law" in the article " People search engine "). As a participant in the process, Yasni is also involved in some key judgments on the subject of data protection on the Internet, B. to "No violation of personal rights through image preview in people search engine".

There is also criticism of search engine optimization, which ensures that Yasni results pages displace “real” search results in Google. In addition, criticism has been expressed that Yasni has the search results indexed by search engines. This undermines the function of the robots.txt file and is a typical feature of “ scraper sites ”. Furthermore, the target page is not linked directly - as is usual with search engines - but referred to an internal page that displays the page in a frame and provides Yasni advertising. Another problem is that Yasni does not quickly capture all (important) information that can be found on the Internet. Exposé owners have the option of naming such websites themselves. Photos on the Internet, especially Wikipedia images, are rarely or not at all recorded and named or with months of delay.

In addition to the technical function specified by Yasni, there is the possibility within the community to confirm information about those recorded. If you check an entry at random (like "Michael Schreiber") you will find hundreds of false "authentications". Something appears to be genuine that is actually not related to the registered person, but z. B. on namesakes or, as in the case mentioned, on "stayfriends".

Furthermore, Yasni's handling of the data protection directive 95/46 / EC is controversial, on which the judgment of May 13, 2014 of the European Court of Justice on the right to be forgotten is based. As soon as this right was exercised for a result at Yasni through a subjectively designed "censorship link", the personal name assigned to the result appeared in the search engine zensierte-namen.de operated by Yasni. Yasni completely dispensed with an identity check of the applicant. Furthermore, the removal tool has been completely discontinued, so that you have to make a cumbersome application to the site operator. The reference to the alleged censorship of the compiled data still appears, at least for content removed in the past.
