Masumura Yasuzo

Masumura Yasuzō ( Japanese 増 村 保 造 ; born August 25, 1924 in Kofu , Yamanashi Prefecture ; † November 23, 1986 ) was a Japanese film director .

Life

Yasuzō worked after dropping out of his law degree at the University of Tokyo as an assistant director at the Daiei Motion Picture Company . He later returned to the university and studied philosophy with a successful degree in 1949. With the help of a film scholarship, Masumura went to Italy and studied film studies at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia . He worked with Michelangelo Antonioni , Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti .

From 1953 he went back to Japan and worked from 1955 as assistant director under Kenji Mizoguchi and Kon Ichikawa before he was allowed to direct his own film Kuchizuke in 1957 . After more than three decades and more than 60 films, Masumura died in 1986 .
