Yeda Pessoa de Castro
Yeda Pessoa de Castro (* 20th century in Salvador da Bahia ) is a Brazilian ethnolinguist .
Life
Little is known about her personal life. She received her PhD in African languages from what was then the Université Nationale du Zaïre , now the University of Kinshasa , and was the first Brazilian woman to defend her doctoral thesis at an African university. Her first journalistic contributions appeared in the second half of the 1970s. Her Falares Africanos na Bahia is considered a magnum opus . Um vocabulário Afro-Brasileiro ( African languages in Bahia. An Afro-Brazilian dictionary ), which has been published several times and is now the subject of dissertations. The language of the Afro-Brazilian remained her main topic, which she conveyed in numerous contributions and at congresses. She is considered a pioneer for her research into the influences of the Ewe and the Fon on Brazilian Portuguese . In her professional career she has performed numerous committee and consultancy work. This included work as a technical advisor for African languages at the Museu da Língua Portuguesa in São Paulo , work as a permanent member of the Brazilian Science Committee for the UNESCO project The Slave Route and from 1986 to 1988 as a cultural attaché to the Brazilian embassy in Trinidad and Tobago , as well as consulting activities for 2001 to 2003 for the Ministry of Culture Fundação Cultural Palmares ( Quilombo in Palmares ).
At the Universidade Federal da Bahia she was a professor for African languages and cultures, as well as at the Universidade Estadual da Bahia . She worked as a visiting professor at various universities in Africa and the Caribbean, and until 2000 at universities in Germany. She was co-founder and director of the Centro de Estudos Afro-Orientais in Salvador da Bahia and co-founder of the Museu Afro-Brasileiro there .
In 2007 she was elected to the Academia de Letras da Bahia (Cadeira 11).
