Yehuda Teichtal (* 1972 in Brooklyn , New York City , United States ) is an American Orthodox rabbi of the Chabad Lubavitch Movement. He is the rabbi of the Berlin Jewish Community and chairman of the Chabad Jewish Education Center in Berlin .

Life

Yehuda Teichtal was born in New York City and grew up there in a traditional Jewish family. He graduated from high school in 1989 and then attended Rabbinical College in Morristown , New Jersey . He received his ordination from Chief Justice Rabbi Goldberg. At the age of 23 he was ordained a rabbi at the Central Lubavitch Yeshiva in New York . Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson suggested that he go to Germany to support Jewish life there. In 1996, Yehuda and Leah Teichtal came to Berlin with their family. As part of the Jewish community in Berlin, Yehuda Teichtal established a Chabad branch. The largest Jewish education center in Europe was opened in 2007 under his chairmanship in the western part of the city of Berlin. The construction was financed with donations from the community members. He and his wife Leah have two sons and four daughters.

This 6 million euro building is the first Jewish center built in Germany after the Shoah, which is mainly financed by private donations. In addition to a synagogue with 250 seats, a seminar hall, a culture library, a multimedia center, a youth lounge, a restaurant, a tourist center and a Judaica shop are part of the house's offerings.

Teichtal stands up for a Jewish community that is open to everyone, no matter what background he or she has, and he promotes the willingness to spread Jewish knowledge.

Anti-Semitic attack

At the end of July 2019, Rabbi Teichtal was the victim of an anti-Semitic attack - on the way home after the service he was verbally abused and spat at by two men in Arabic near a synagogue in the Wilmersdorf district in front of his child.

In the days that followed, there was widespread media coverage of the attack on Teichtal and other similar attacks on Jews in Munich and Berlin. Various professional politicians showed their solidarity with Yehuda Teichtal. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Rabbi Teichtal at home to express his solidarity and support. Many Berlin public figures and high-ranking politicians took part in a solidarity prayer organized by Chabad . a. Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Bundestag Vice- President Petra Pau .

The corresponding investigative proceedings had to be discontinued because there had been suspects during the investigation, but the crime could not be clearly proven to them despite cell phone evaluations and witnesses.
