Jewish Education Center Chabad Berlin
The Jewish Education Center Chabad Lubawitsch Berlin opened in 2007 in Berlin-Wilmersdorf , Germany, and offers services for all age groups. Yehuda Teichtal , community rabbi of the Berlin Jewish Community , heads the Jewish Education Center.
The Jewish Education Center has a traditional synagogue with 250 seats, a Jewish ritual bath ( mikveh ), a kosher restaurant, a yeshiva (rabbi training program), seminar rooms, as well as a ballroom, a library, a youth lounge and a Judaica shop. It is the largest Jewish education center in Europe and a meeting place for different cultures.
Surname
Chabad stands for the three Hebrew words Chachma, Bina and Daat: for wisdom, understanding and knowledge. Lubavitch is the name of a small town in Belarus. In the 18th century, the Chabad philosophy was founded by Rabbi Schneur Zalman in the Carpathian Liadi. Since Rabbi Schneur's death, rabbis from Lubavitch have continued his work for five generations. A network of educational, traditional and social institutions was created. With Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson , Chabad Lubavitch became active worldwide.

The Chabad organizes seminars and workshops on Jewish topics for the public. A traditional Jewish school and a kindergarten were opened, which are officially recognized. There are also programs where young people can learn more about their Jewish roots. The center has founded an initiative that offers help to people in need. As an Orthodox Jewish organization, the Chabad supports the promotion of Jewish tradition among its community members.
Chabad is represented in Berlin not only by the Jewish Education Center, but also by the Chabad Student Center in Wilmersdorf, the Chabad at Alexanderplatz , the traditional Jewish school in Spandau and the Jewish kindergarten Gan Israel in Spandau and Wilmersdorf.
In June 2018, Chabad started construction work on the Pears Jewish Campus, which will serve as a platform for education and leisure.
On December 2, 2018, the Jewish Education Center organized a public ceremony to light the first Hanukkah candle together with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier . The event took place on Pariser Platz in front of the Brandenburg Gate in the presence of high-ranking politicians and public figures, such as the Governing Mayor Michael Müller , the Bundestag Vice- President Petra Pau , the American Ambassador Richard Grenell , the President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany Josef Schuster and the chairman of the Jewish community in Berlin Gideon Joffe .
Affiliated institutions
- The Chabad Center on Alexanderplatz has existed since 2011. Due to its central location, this center is visited by tourists from Israel, the USA and other countries. The center offers Shabbat services and also serves as a place for studying. The predominant language there is Hebrew, but visitors also speak English, German, French and Russian.
- The Chabad Jewish Student Center is geared towards Berlin students and offers educational programs, leisure activities and entertainment for young people.
