Sun Yunzhu

Sun Yunzhu , also Yen Chu Sun with the abbreviation YC Sun, (born October 1, 1897 in Kao-Yu , Kiangsu Province , † 1979 ) was a Chinese paleontologist .

Sun went to Nanking Middle School and graduated from Beijing National University with a bachelor's degree in geology and paleontology . Then he was a geologist with the Geological Survey of China and an Associated Professor at Beijing University. In 1927 he received his doctorate under Johannes Walther at the University of Halle . After that he was a professor at Peking University. During the war with Japan, the northern universities, including Beijing, were relocated to Kunming , and Sun headed the Faculty of Geology, Geography and Meteorology there. After the war he was again director of the Institute of Geology and Paleontology at Peking University until 1952. He then headed the geology department in the Ministry of Education .

He was one of the most important paleontologists in China and dealt mainly with paleontology and stratigraphy of the Paleozoic Era . He also dealt with general problems such as marine transgression .

With Yang Zhongjian he decided in 1927 on an excursion of the German Geological Society to the Harz Mountains to found the Chinese Paleontological Society, which took place in Beijing in August 1929. Ding Wenjiang , Amadeus William Grabau and Sun Yunzhu were elected as the first official representatives .

Sun was the first to describe the Ceratiten Ceratites stolleyi SUN in 1927

In 1955 he became a member of the Academia Sinica and in 1960 Vice President of the Academy of Geological Sciences. He was a founding member of the Geological Society of China and its President and he was the President of the Paleontological Society of China.
