Yiannis Gabriel

The sociologist Yiannis Gabriel (* 1952 ) has been Professor of Organizational Research at the University of Bath and Head of the Student Council since 1989 . Gabriel previously taught at Imperial College and Royal Holloway University in London.

Career

Gabriel holds an engineering degree from Imperial College, where he also studied industrial sociology in an advanced course. He continued his studies in sociology at the University of California at Berkley and received his PhD in 1981. After graduating, Gabriel served his military service in Greece. He then took up teaching positions at various British universities.

In addition to his teaching activities, Gabriel is also active as the publisher of specialist journals such as Management Learning or in the editing of Human Relations . In 2014 Gabriel was elected to the Board of the European Group for Organizational Studies .

Research interests

Gabriel became known for his work on storytelling in organizations, leadership, learning management, culture and politics of contemporary consumption. By exploring the stories and narratives in organizations as expressions of their culture, politics, and symbolism, Gabriel examines the relationship between leaders and those being led, education of leaders, and dysfunctional leadership. He researches learning processes and the nature of management knowledge. In addition, Gabriel also researches consumption and consumer behavior, in particular with regard to material artifacts and the identity at the interface between organization and consumers. Another focus is the psychoanalysis of organizations, where Gabriel examines processes such as the unconscious, narcissism and desire, emotion and fantasy in organizations with concepts and theories of psychoanalysis.

Honors

In 2012 an article by Gabriel ( Against the tyranny of PowerPoint: technology-in-use and technology abuse ) was voted "Management Article of the Year".
