The European Group for Organizational Studies ( EGOS ; French Groupe européen d'études d'organization ) is an originally European association for organizational research founded in 1973 at the suggestion of Michael Aiken , which was registered in 1998 with a foundation from Finland under Belgian law and one of the largest and most important science platforms in the field of organizational research. In cooperation with the Walter de Gruyter publishing house , a scientific journal was published from 1975 - Organization Studies . From 1980 this body was headed by founding member of EGOS David J. Hickson as editor-in-chief until 1990. In 2002, SAGE Publications took over the publishing house of the highly regarded and influential science magazine ( Impact Factor (2011) 2,382).

Foundation and organization

Contemporary witnesses describe the American sociologist Michael Aiken, who worked at the KU Leuven at the time , as the initiator of the founding of EGOS. At a 1973 conference at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in Wassenaar , the Netherlands , Aiken noted that European researchers were very familiar with even second-rate research in America, but had little knowledge of the research of their immediate neighbors. In contrast to earlier attempts at organization, Aiken pursued the initiative and convinced Michel Crozier , who in turn contacted the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (MSH) in Paris, through a meeting of leading sociologists in the same year, in addition to Aiken himself the French Michel Crozier and Werner Ackermann , the Swiss Jean-Claude Thoenig and Peter Atteslander , the Italian Franco Ferraresi and the Paris-based Austrian Erhard Friedberg , the British David J. Hickson and the Dutch Cor Lammers . Cor Lammers (1998) referred to this meeting as the constituent assembly for the establishment of the European Group for Organizational Studies.

EGOS, as also by Royston Greenwood et al. (2010) confirms the result of the initiative by sociologists and less so by management researchers. In addition to those present at the time, Greenwood mentions Renate Mayntz as a decisive influence. The first secretariat was set up in MSN Paris in 1974, but has been in ten different locations since it was founded and is currently in Berlin, Germany. In 1975 the first EGOS Colloquium was held in Breau-sans-Nappe . For about 25 years EGOS was a loosely woven network of personal and professional relationships, of colloquia and working groups. It was not until 1998 that this loose network was converted into a formally registered association in Brussels with a Finnish foundation.

Closely related to the development of EGOS is the development of Organization Studies, the organ of the association. According to Greenwood et al. (2010), the development from a generic European approach to a global approach reflects the development of EGOS, which increasingly chooses more global approaches in order to incorporate other - especially North American approaches.

Bodies

As a registered association, EGOS has to elect a supervisory body, the board, which is presided over by a chairman. The chairperson and successor of Renate E. Meyer ( Vienna University of Economics and Business ) is Silviya Svejenova ( Copenhagen Business School ) on the board (2014 ). Your deputy is Mike Geppert ( Friedrich Schiller University Jena ). Renate E. Meyer will take on the role of Treasurer on the Board in 2014. The other board members are Ola Bergström ( University of Gothenburg ), Ann Langley ( HEC Montreal ), Yiannis Gabriel ( University of Bath ), David C. Wilson ( Open University ), Frank den Hond ( Hanken School of Economics ), Robin Holt ( University of Liverpool ), Paula Jarzabkowski ( City University London ) and head of the secretariat.

In 2014 David Seidl ( University of Zurich ) left the board, in 2013 it was Eero Vaara ( Hanken School of Economics ) and David Courpasson ( EM Lyon ).

activities

The first colloquium took place in 1975 with the support of MSN in Bréau-sans-Nappe, a district of Boinville-le-Gaillard in the Rambouillet arrondissement , southwest of Paris. Colloquia followed annually, in 1974 in Arresohoi (Denmark) and 1975 in Speyer (Germany).

In 2012 EGOS organized the 28th EGOS Colloquium at Aalto University in Helsinki (July 2-7, 2012). The 29th Colloquium will take place in Montréal, the 30th is planned for 2014 in Rotterdam. The 2015 conference venue will be Tallinn in Estonia. Lecturers from all over the world give lectures at the colloquia.

Work takes place in "Standing Working Groups" (SWGs) with topics from organizational sciences that are coordinated by specialists from all over the world. SWGs must be formed according to fixed rules and meet at least four times a year, with a report with results being drawn up and reported to the board after the third meeting.

Known members

When it was founded, EGOS was heavily influenced by members of the Aston Group . The multidisciplinary approach of EGOS was also anticipated by the Aston group. Among the founding members was David J. Hickson who belongs to the first generation of the Astonians. In addition to Hickson, other people from the Aston environment also took on the role of chief editor in Organization Studies, for example David C. Wilson , John Child and Stewart Clegg .
