David John Hickson ( April 20, 1931 - June 22, 2016 ) was a British economist and professor emeritus at the University of Bradford Management School in Bradford .

Career

Hickson worked in human resource management at the Bristol Stock Exchange, switched to an academic career on the advice of Reginald Revans , where he remained until his retirement. His research dealt with the influence of general culture on decisions in organizations in different countries and the influences on decisions. In addition, he dealt with power and bureaucracy research.

Hickson was a co-founder of the European Group for Organizational Studies (EGOS ; 1975, Bréau-sans-Nappe near Paris) and first editor-in-chief (1980–1990) of the newly founded journal Organization Studies , which he made the leading organ of organizational research in Europe. In 1998, Hickson was honored as the first honorary member of EGOS.

His professional activities also include work at Birmingham College of Advanced Technology , later renamed Aston University , where he became the Aston Group's senior executive alongside Derek S. Pugh . In the course of his career, Hickson was involved in universities and research institutes in various countries, including a two-year research stay at the University of Alberta Quasi as a by-product of his activities in the Aston Group, a contingency theory of power ( strategic contingencies theory of interaorganizational power ). According to this model, organizations must necessarily work in a division of labor. This creates functional interdependencies, with three strategic conditions determining the power or powerlessness of the unit:

  • Managing Uncertainty - The department best able to cope with environmental insecurity is gaining power.
  • Non-substitutability - the department's service must be impossible or difficult to replace.
  • Centrality - the department must be sufficiently with the other departments coupled be.

This research was rewarded with his appointment as professor at the University of Bradford. In the course of these activities, Hickson was heavily involved in the research on decision theory.
