CJ Lammers

Cornelis Jacobus ("Cor") Lammers (born April 20, 1928 Amsterdam ; † May 1, 2009 Oegstgeest ) was a Dutch sociologist and one of the founders of organizational theory research in the Netherlands.

Life

After studying at the University of Michigan and the University of Amsterdam , Lammers received his doctorate there in 1963. In 1964, he took over a professorship for sociology at the University of Leyden . He stayed in Leyden until his retirement in 1993. In 1972 and 1973 he was a Fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS). In 1974, as a Fullbright Scholar , he examined the status of organizational sociology research in the USA.

In his work, Lammers built bridges between the various strands of sociological research in European countries. His approach and specialty was exemplary for Dutch sociologists: local scholar with a cosmopolitan understanding. Throughout his life, Lammers studied evacuation and disaster experiences, general practitioners and their patients, and strikes and mutinies in the late 50s and early 60s of the twentieth century. In the early 21st century, he researched the military at war, military occupation, and atrocities. Add democracy in organizations, as well as socialization processes, student associations and so on and so forth ...

In doing so, Lammers remained firmly rooted in Dutch sociology, but at the same time collected his findings worldwide, fitting his findings both historically and systematically into a closed system. And despite this comprehensive approach, Lammers did not allow himself to be misled into using his sociology as a tool of management, and he avoided too strong connections to the business schools.

Lammers research repeatedly took more recent theories from the middle of the theoretical body and combined them with empirical data. In doing so, he combined general sociology with organizational sociology , with a virtuoso mastery of both subjects. He reminded sociologists that you don't have to reinvent the wheel to do good research. At the same time, he criticized very fashion-driven research approaches.

Lammers was one of the founders alongside the American Michael Aiken , the French Michel Crozier and Werner Ackermann , the (then) Swiss Jean-Claude Thoenig and Peter Atteslander , the Italian Franco Ferraresi , the Austrian Erhard Friedberg and the British David J. Hickson of the European Group for Organizational Studies (EGOS).

bibliography

During his career, Lammers has published around 20 books and published around 75 articles in well-known journals such as the American Journal of Sociology , Administrative Science Quarterly and Organization Studies . His work, written together with Jacques van Doorn , Moderne sociologie: Systematiek en analyze? became a standard work for sociologists in the Netherlands for over two decades.
