John Child (economist)

John Child (* 1940 ) is a British economist emeritus and former Chair of Commerce at the University of Birmingham, as well as Diageo Professor of Management at the University of Cambridge and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Hong Kong. He still holds visiting professorships in Brazil and China. He is also Professor of Management at Plymouth University in the UK.

education

Child received a Masters Degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge and stayed at the University until earning a PhD.

Career

Child began his career with Rolls-Royce in marketing and human resources, where he was involved in the reorganization of the Oil Engine division . From 1966 to 1968 he worked as a fellow at Aston University , where he came into contact with the Aston group around Derek S. Pugh . From 1968 to 73 he worked at the Business School of London Business School . When he was appointed Professor of Organizational Behavior at Aston University in 1973, he took up his own teaching activities. From 1986 to 89 he was dean of the Aston Business School. From 1989 to 1990 he became deputy dean of the China-European Community Management Center in Beijing, with which he had been in relationship since 1985. The center is the only foreign-Chinese management institute that survived the events on Tian'anmen Square (June 4, 1989) and has since evolved into the China Europe International Business School . In 1991 he took over the Diageo Chair of Management in Cambridge.

From 1992 to 1996 he was the editor-in-chief of the renowned journal Organization Studies and he is the founder of the Center for International Business and Management (CIBAM) in Cambridge. Under his leadership, Organization Studies increased by 50%.

In addition to his activities in teaching and journalism, Child also founded a management consultancy in 1973, which he later sold.

Honors

In 1984 the University of Cambridge awarded Child the Doctor of Science , an honor for his outstanding contributions to teaching. In 1996 the Helsinki School of Commerce awarded him an honorary doctorate, as did the Corvinus University in Budapest in 2009 . In 2002 Child was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Management and the British Academy of Management . In 2004, Child received the Distinguished Contribution Award from the Chinese Management Research Association, which in 2012 also gave him the first award of this kind for his life's work. In 2006 Child was made an honorary member of the European Group for Organizational Studies (EGOS). In the same year he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy . In 2009 he received the Terry Award from the Academy of Management . The Aston University - Childs most important workplace - awarded him an honorary doctorate in-2013.

Work

Child researched general management and economic reforms in China. In addition, he examined the organization and performance of strategic alliances, the internationalization of small and medium-sized companies and the development of new forms of organization.
