Yizhou (municipality)
Yizhou ( Chinese 伊州 区 , Pinyin Yīzhōu Qū ; Uighur ئىۋىرغول رايونى/ Iwirƣol Rayoni ), until 2016 as the city of Kumul ( Chinese 哈密 市 , Pinyin Hāmì Shì ; Uighur قۇمۇل شەھىرى/ Ⱪumul Xəⱨiri , also known as Hami ), is a municipality in the Kumul (Hami) administrative district in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China . The municipality is an oasis. Its area is 85,035 km². The city of Xingxingxia (Singsingsia) (星星 峡 镇) is on the border with Gansu .
Several archaeological sites in the Kumul City area were added to the List of Monuments of the People's Republic of China in 2001 and 2006 :
- Buddhist monastery ruins of Baiyanggou ( Baiyanggou Fosi yizhi )
- Yanbulaq Tombs ( Bronze Age , Early Iron Age ) ( Yanbulake gumuqun )
- Wubao Tombs ( Bronze Age ) ( Wubao muqun )
- Tombs of the Muslim kings of Hami ( Hami Hui wangmu )
history
The Tibetans invaded the areas abandoned by China under the Tang Dynasty from 756 and conquered the city and the oasis in 781, and the Chinese returned from 842.
