Araturük ( Chinese  伊吾 县 , Pinyin Yīwú Xiàn ; Uighur ئارا تۈرۈك ناھىيىسى, Ara Türük Naⱨiyisi ) is a district in the People's Republic of China . It belongs to the prefecture-level city of Kumul / Hami in the Uyghur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang . He administers a territory of 19820.72 square kilometers, which is only very sparsely populated.

Araturük is located in the east of Xinjiang and in the northeast of Kumul at a distance of 761 kilometers from the regional capital Urumqi . It borders the Yizhou district to the south, Barkol to the west, and Mongolia ( Gobi-Altai-Aimag ) to the east and north . Its relief rises from the northeast to the southwest. In the south are the mountain ranges of the Tian Shan Mountains, in the middle the northern, hilly-mountainous foreland of the Tian Shan. The north and east are flat. The climate is continental and very dry with 89 millimeters of precipitation per year. The annual average temperature is 3.6 ° C, the temperature differences between day and night as well as summer and winter are high. Araturük is supplied with water from meltwater from the Tian Shan glaciers and from mountain springs.

At the end of 2012, Araturük had a total population of around 20,000. The 2000 population census showed a total population of 17,418 people in 4514 households, of which 9056 men and 8362 women. The population of Araturük is made up of ten nationalities , of which the Han , Uighurs , Kazakhs and Hui are the most important.

Administrative structure

As of 2018, the district of Araturük consists of three large municipalities , three municipalities , a nationality municipality and some state institutions at the municipality level :

  • Large communities Yiwu (伊吾 镇), Naomaohu (淖 毛 湖镇), Yanchi (盐池 镇)
  • Communities Weizixia (苇子峡乡) Xiamaya (下马崖乡) Tuhulu (吐葫芦乡)
  • Nationality community Qianshan (前山哈萨克族乡) of the Kazakhs
  • Yiwu Industrial Area (伊吾 县 工业 加工 区), Yiwu-Shannan Economic Development Area (伊吾 县 山南 开发区 管委会), Naomaohu Military Farm (兵团 淖 毛 湖 农场)

Economy and Transport

In Araturük there are deposits of coal , mirabilite , iron , copper , alum , agate , gold , petroleum and granite .

Araturük's agriculture is known for cantaloupe melons and salted mutton.

Araturük is connected to the urban area of Kumul and Barkol by a trunk road . The Naomaohu community is the end of the Naomaohu – Hongliuhe railway line , which is only used for freight traffic.
