Life

In the fourteenth Knesset (election of May 29, 1996) he was a member of the Avoda (Israeli Labor Party, Zionist party of the center-left). He worked on the board of directors of various political, economic and civic organizations. In 2003 he was elected mayor of Haifa and on June 29, 2006, he moved to Kadima (German: "Forward"), a liberal party in the middle of the Israeli spectrum, founded by Ariel Sharon .

Jona Jahaw, whose father came from Cologne , once confessed that as a teenager he had sworn to never set foot on German soil.

During a trip to the twin city of Mainz on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Haifa - Mainz city partnership in May 2007, he planted a vine and was appointed Consitor Senatus Vineti of the Mainz Wine Senate . The vine planting ties in with the Israeli tradition of having visitors to the country plant a tree.
