Yonggang Huang (* 1962 in Beijing ) is a Chinese-American engineer.

Huang graduated from Peking University with a bachelor's degree in mechanics in 1984. He then studied at Harvard University with a master's degree in 1987 and a PhD under John W. Hutchinson in 1990. He became an assistant professor at the University of Arizona in 1991 , 1995 Associate Professor at Michigan Technological University . From 1998 he was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with full professorship from 2001, and from 2007 Joseph Cummings professor at Northwestern University . From 2015 he has been Walter P. Murphy Professor of Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering there.

Huang deals with the mechanics of materials (strength theory) on different and over different scales with applications for example in carbon nanotubes, medicine, electronics (stretchable and flexible electronic components, for example on the skin) and three-dimensional deterministic assembly.

He is the editor of the Journal of Applied Mechanics . Huang received the Von Karman Medal in 2019 , the William Prager Medal in 2017, the Nadai Medal in 2016 and the Daniel C. Drucker Medal in 2013 . He is a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a member of the Academia Europaea and the National Academy of Engineering . In 2008 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. He was one of the ISI Highly Cited Researchers in Engineering in 2009 and in Materials Science in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, Huang was President of the Society of Engineering Sciences (SES), and in 2020 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences .
