Yoshiko Uchida

Yoshiko Uchida (born November 24, 1921 in Alameda , California , † June 21, 1992 ) was an American writer .

Born as Nisei in the USA, Yoshiko was already writing stories at the age of ten. After high school , she enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley at the age of 16 . After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (1941), Americans of Japanese descent were exposed to persecution in the United States, including the Yoshikos family.

In the novel Journey to Topaz (1971), she deals with the turmoil between different cultures. She gained fame above all for the autobiography Desert Exile (1982) in which she also addresses internment . She also wrote works for children.
