Youssoufia ( Arabic اليوسفية, Taschelhit ⵍⵢⵓⵙⵓⴼⵢⵢⴰ ) is a Moroccan city in the Marrakech-Safi region . It is the capital of the province of the same name .
location
The city of Youssoufia is about 82 km (driving distance) east of Safi and 123 km south of El Jadida . Marrakech is about 105 km to the southeast.
history
The city of Youssoufia was only founded in 1931 by the French colonial rulers after the discovery of rich phosphate deposits in the area. After the creation of the province of the same name in 2009, the city became the provincial capital.
population
The majority of the population who work in agriculture as well as small traders, taxi drivers, etc. is of Berber descent. Leading positions in business, trade and administration as well as in banking, health and education are in the hands of the ethnic minority. Moroccan Arabic is mostly spoken among each other.
economy
The main source of income for the province and the city is phosphate mining in the area and its processing. Their status as provincial capital also created administrative jobs; there is also a university in the city.
Attractions
In the new, but dusty and unattractive city, there are no historically or culturally significant sights.
