The Ypirangathemis calverti is the only dragonfly species of the genus Ypirangathemis from the subfamily Sympetrinae . It occurs in the south of Venezuela , Guiana and in the south-east of Brazil . The larvae have not yet been described. The specific epithet honors the American entomologist Philip Powell Calvert .
Construction of the Imago
The brownish animal reaches a length of 27–34 millimeters, which means that it is rather small to medium-sized. The vertex and the postfrons are metallic blue on old specimens. The part of the thorax to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax, is light brown with a black mesh structure on the back (dorsum) that fades to the side. The wings are transparent but can also have a wide dark brown band between the wing triangle and the yellowish wing mark ( pterostigma ). Similar to representatives of Erythrodiplax , Nannothemis , Pseudoleon and Uracis , the last segment of the vesica spermalis is long and cylindrical. The vertex is rounded.
Similar genera
Ypirangathemis calverti is very similar to members of the genus Uracis , but can be distinguished from them due to the rounded vertex, for example.
