Yuin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yuin are an Aboriginal tribe on the south coast of New South Wales . This tribe is divided into two groups, the Walbanga , who live north of Narooma and the Dyiringanj (or Djiringanj), who live from Narooma south to Bega and west of it to the heights of the Great Dividing Range , which form the border .

The Yuin's land stretched from Cape Howe to the Shoalhaven River and inland to the Great Dividing Range.

history

The number of Yuin in 1788 was about 11,000 people, which was reduced to 600 by the middle of the 19th century due to smallpox epidemics in 1789 and 1830, as well as due to tribal wars and diseases that the European whalers brought with and against which the Aborigines had no defenses.

country

The Eurobodalla Shire Council signed a local Yuin agreement on land rights in 1998; and in 2001 a memorandum was signed by Bega, Eden, Merriman's Local Aboriginal Land Councils and Native Title Holders, and the Bega Valley Shire Council .

On May 6, 2006, the Yuin was given back the full legal title of Gulaga and Biamanga National Park by the government of New South Wales. This land right in Gulaga National Park is held in a trust by the Merrimans and Wagonga Local Aboriginal Lands Councils and that of Biamanga is held by the Trust by Merrimans and Bega Local Aboriginal Lands Councils .

The Yuin consider themselves the traditional owners of Wallaga Lake land. They organize the Umbarra Cultural Center near this lake. The former Wallaga Lake National Park has merged into Gulaga National Park .

Merriman Island in Wallaga Lake is a sacred place for the Yuin and on November 25, 1977 it became the first place in New South Wales to be declared an Aboriginal Heritage Site. The island is part of the New South Wales National Park and Wildlife Service . The island is named after King Merriman, the leader of the Yuin, who died in 1904. His name was Umbarra and his wife's was Queen Narelle.

In this area there are two sacred mountains for the Yuins, the Mumballa and the 806 meter high Mount Gulaga . The Mumballa bulla Mountain lies in the middle of the Bega Valley Shire and was named in November 1973 after Jack Mumballa, who was an elder of the Yuin. Mumbulla Mountain is the most important and centrally located place in Biamanga National Park for ceremonies. Certain areas of the park can be used for ceremonies by both Aboriginal men and women.

Mount Dromedary, now called Mount Gulaga, is located in Gulaga National Park and is considered by the Yuin to be the ancestral place of their creators. Gulaga symbolizes the mother figure and provides the basis of the spiritual identity of the women and men of the Yuin.

Montague Island is known to the Yuin as Barranguba. Barranguba had sons, Gulaga and Najanuga; Barranguba was the eldest son and was allowed to go to sea, while Najanuga always had to stay with his mother.

Name and language

The Yuin are also known as Yuwin, Djiringanj, Dyirringan, Jeringin or Juwin.

The Yuin belong to the Pama-Nyungan language family . They have several dialects, the Djiringanj , Thaua , Walbanga , or Wandandian .
