The first scientific description comes from Glover Morrill Allen from 1923, who described an individual from the Likiang chain in western Yunnan Province . The species was originally regarded as a subspecies or synonym of the Gansu shrew ( Chodsigoa lamula ), but the species status has now been confirmed.

Apart from the nominate form Chodsigoa parva parva, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Threat and protection

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) does not classify the Yunnan pygmy shrew in any endangerment category, as hardly any data on the species are available (“data deficient”). Concrete population numbers and threats to the species are not known.
