Yura Halim

Yura Halim (real name: Pengiran Haji Mohamed Yusuf bin Pengiran Abdul Rahim ; * May 2, 1923 ; † April 11, 2016 ) was a Bruneian civil servant, diplomat and poet. He was a member of the Legislative Council until the end of his life.

Life and education

First he attended school in Tutong . In 1939 he began training as a teacher at the Sultan Idris Teachers College in Perak . This included language lessons in Japanese - first in Sarawak , later in Tokyo and Hiroshima. In 1954 he attended South Devon Technical College in England to study public and social administration.

Halim studied at Hiroshima University in Japan during World War II , where he survived the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima .

Political career

Halim worked in various offices in the country. His career began in 1957 as an official in the Ministry of Information, followed by the position of Deputy Secretary of State and Director of Broadcasting and Information. From 1967 to 1972 he held the office of Supreme Minister ( Menteri Besar ). In 1973 he initially retired from civil service.

In 1995 he was appointed Brunei High Commissioner in Malaysia . This was followed by the position of ambassador to Japan (2001-2002).

In 1953, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin III set up a committee ( Tujuh Serangkai) consisting of 7 people to draw up a constitution. The constitution came into force in 1959. Yura Halim was the last living member of this committee.

He is the author of the text of the national anthem of Brunei, Allah Peliharakan Sultan .

Outside of politics

Between his political offices, Halim worked in the private sector. He was vice chairman of QAF Brunei Sdn Bhd, the parent company of Brunei Press Sdn Bhd, and played a leading role in founding Media Permata, one of the leading newspapers in Brunei.

Awards

As a writer, Halim received several prizes, e.g. B. the SEA Write Award , Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Education Award , Honorary Doctorate from Universiti Brunei Darussalam and the Brunei Darussalam Religious Meritorious Service Awards . The University of Hiroshima made him an honorary doctorate in 2013 for his services to political relations between Japan and Brunei.
