Yves Gambier

Yves Gambier (born January 20, 1949 in Rouen , France ) is a French linguist and professor emeritus of translation and interpreting at the School of Languages ​​and Translation Studies (Department of French) at the University of Turku in Finland . From 1995 to 2010 he was director of the Center for Translation and Interpreting at the University of Turku, which was dissolved in 2010 and divided into different departments and which was the forerunner of today's School of Languages ​​and Translation Studies.

His main interests and areas of expertise include translation theory and history, sociolinguistics , terminology , language policy , language planning , bilingualism, and discourse and conversation analysis . Life

Yves Gambier (PhD in Linguistics) has been a lecturer at the Turun Kieli-Instituutti in Finland since 1973, which has been training translators and interpreters since 1966 and became part of the University of Turku in 1981. From 1982 to 1983 and from 1990 to 1994 he worked there as a representative, from 1994 to 1998 he was employed as a lecturer and since 1998 he has been a university professor. In 1981 Gambier received his doctorate with the thesis Approches théoriques et pratiques de l'interaction langagière , at a time when conversation analysis had not yet found widespread use and pragmatics was still in its infancy. Organizations and projects

Gambier was Vice President from 1993 to 1998 and then President of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST) from 1998 to 2004. From 1993 to 2005 he was also a member of the Finnish Association of Translators and Interpreters (SKTL), was chairman of the Committee for the media of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) from 1993-2004 and also one of the founding members and vice-president (1996–2004) 1998) of the European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST) (President 1998–2004). Yves Gambier has been researching audiovisual translation since the early 1990s. He has been and is a member of more than 30 scientific committees and international conferences, particularly in the fields of technical language and audiovisual translation, held both in Turku and abroad.
