Yves Rocher

Yves Rocher (born April 7, 1930 in La Gacilly ; † December 26, 2009 in Paris ) was a French industrialist in the field of cosmetics .

Life

At the age of 14, after the death of his father, Yves Rocher began helping his mother in her small textile business. An old healer trusted him the recipe for a hemostatic Scharbockskraut of ointment. Rocher decided to handcraft such ointments in the attic of the family home and to sell them directly . In 1958 he founded the Yves Rocher company named after him as a mail order company. The cosmetics company became a world-famous brand in the decades to come. In 1969 Yves Rocher opened his first shop in Paris. All his life he relied on herbal ingredients and rejected artificial ingredients.

Rocher has received numerous awards, including being appointed Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1992 and Commander of the Legion of Honor in 2007. In 2002 he was awarded the so-called Ermine Order - an honorary award given annually by the Institut culturel de Bretagne to four deserving personalities.

From 1962 to 2008, Rocher Mayor his now wealthy by the company home town La Gacilly, 1982 for the District of La Gacilly member of the General Council of the department of Morbihan and from 1992 for the canton of La Gacilly member of the Regional Council of Brittany . Rocher's younger son Jacques Rocher succeeded his father and has been Mayor of La Gacilly since 2008 .

In 1992 Rocher handed over the management of the cosmetics company to his older son Didier Rocher (1953–1994). However, he returned to the top three years later after Didier was killed in a gun accident at a shooting range. Yves Rocher's grandson and son of Didier Rocher, Bris Rocher (* 1978), has been running the business since 2007 .

Yves Rocher died on December 26, 2009 at the age of 79 after suffering a stroke in Marrakech two weeks earlier .

On the day of his death, French President Nicolas Sarkozy paid tribute to Yves Rocher as the inventor of plant-based cosmetics, as a pioneer of sales by mail and as a politician. For more than 50 years, Rocher has understood how to build up “step by step a group of companies serving the beauty of women”. In particular, he also praised his commitment to protecting the environment, for the purpose of which the industrialist founded the “Yves Rocher - Institut de France” foundation. As a socially minded entrepreneur, he has created permanent jobs.
