Yvonne Haddad

Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad (born March 23, 1935 in Alexandretta , Syria ) is an American university professor of Syrian origin who deals with the history of Islam and Christian-Muslim understanding .

life and work

She is Professor of History of Islam and Christian – Muslim Relations at the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding (“Prince-al-Walid-bin-Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding”; ACMCU) of the Jesuits led Georgetown University in Washington, DC your interests and working interests include contemporary Islam , intellectual, social and political history in the Arab world , Islam in North America and in the west, Koranic exegesis and gender and Islam. She previously taught Islamic history at the University of Massachusetts Amherst . She was president of the Middle East Studies Association .

She holds a BA from Beirut College for Women , MRE from Boston University , MA from University of Wisconsin , Madison , and Ph.D. from Hartford Seminary .

Yvonne Haddad describes herself as a Presbyterian , she emigrated to the USA in 1963.

She is the author and editor of numerous books on Islam in North America , particularly Islam in the United States , including Contemporary Islam and the Challenge of History ; Co-author (with Jane Idleman Smith) of Mission to America , and co-author of Women, Religion, and Social Change , editor of Muslim Communities in North America , The Muslims of America, and many others.

Together with John Esposito and other professors from Georgetown University, she was included in the book The Professors: The 101 Most Dangerous Academics in America , a book by David Horowitz first published in 2006 .
