Zähringer is a small impact crater near the south-eastern edge of the Mare Tranquillitatis . In the northeast lies the Lawrence crater, flooded by lava , and in the southeast the Secchi Mountains with the eponymous Secchi crater . Further to the east is the large Taruntius crater .

Zähringer has a circular, bowl-like shape and contains a small crater floor in the center of the sloping inner walls. There are no traces of erosion from subsequent impacts.

Before it was named after the physicist Josef Zähringer by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1976 , it was referred to as 'Taruntius E'.
