Zülpicher Strasse (Düren)

The Zülpicher road in the district town Düren ( Nordrhein-Westfalen ) is an ancient city road .

The street begins at the end of Oberstraße, where the street crosses Nideggener Straße / Friedrichstraße . The upper gate of the Düren city fortifications stood on Oberstrasse . From there it leads uphill in a south-westerly direction out of the city center . Before the expansion of Euskirchener Strasse in the 1950s, Zülpicher Strasse was one of the important access roads through the five city gates.

On Zülpicher Strasse, at the confluence with Piusstrasse, is the St. Josef branch church . In the upper area, the old Madonna's house was built as early as 1420, at that time outside the city, and in 1895 the new Madonna's house right next to it . Shortly before it ends and where it joins Euskirchener Strasse, there is the entrance to the former Belgian barracks (Düren was the largest Belgian garrison in Germany ). The barracks were later taken over by the German Armed Forces until they were mostly demolished. The remaining area with some preserved structures is used today as a commercial area. A Panzerstraße branched off from Zülpicher Straße in this area and leads to the former Drover Heide military training area.

Today's Zülpicher Straße is attested as "Zülcher Landstraß" as early as 1685. Originally it led across Euskirchener Straße (today field path) via Burg Bubenheim and Vettweiß to Zülpich . Outside Düren, the street, for example on the Tranchot map from 1807 , was called Dürener Straße. Between 1841 and 1843 the expansion took place via Stockheim (today Bundesstrasse 56 ). In 1843 a two-horse mail was set up on this route. In 1862 the street is mentioned as "Düren-Zülpicher Bezirksstraße".
