Bubenheim Castle

The Burg Bubenheim is Rommelsheim in Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia . It was entered on March 22, 1985 in the monument list of the municipality of Nörvenich under No. 68.

location

The lowland castle is located in a woody island in the otherwise treeless Börde countryside , about a kilometer south of Rommelsheim. It is in close proximity to the coronation road from Frankfurt to Aachen . Next to the castle and its farm there is another settlement, Gut Bubenheim and about 500 meters away the Bubenheim stop of the Bördebahn .

history

In 1377 the castle was mentioned as belonging to the Spies von Büllesheim family, and a branch of the Spies von Büllesheim zu Bubenheim (Bobbenheim) family was formed. In 1699 Philippina married Isabella Clara Spies zu Büllesheim and Bubenheim, a former nunnery in Gerresheim , the Baron Johann Franz von Berghe called Trips, whereby the property passed to this family. He was an ancestor of the former Formula 1 driver Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips . In 1757 the castle was sold by his son Adolf Karl to the citizen of Jülich and red tanner Zantis. After several changes of ownership, the property came to the barons of Nellessen from Aachen in 1878 . The Schmitz-Peiffer family has owned the castle since 1935. The castle was named "Castle of the Month" in 2002.

Todays use

In the past century the castle was used as an agricultural property. Today agriculture is only a sideline.

The younger generation discovered a niche in the market. In the largely renovated main building, weddings, company parties etc. can be celebrated in a medieval knight environment. A play area is available for children from near and far, which means that various rooms can be rented for events. The Bubenheimer Spieleland is known far beyond the Rhineland with play equipment, a 3,000 m² indoor play hall and a corn maze .

In August 2016, a training center for the Düren District Hunters' Association was set up in the castle.

investment

The castle complex consists of the main castle and the outer bailey to the west , which after many renovations can hardly be recognized as such. On the west and north sides of the former knight's seat , the remains of the rampart, which is still around ten meters wide and up to 2.6 meters high, and which lay directly in front of the moat , have been preserved .

The former castle chapel , which was consecrated to St. Nicholas , had to be demolished in 1883 because it was dilapidated and was not rebuilt.

Good Bubenheim

Immediately to the west of the castle and partially integrated into the wooded island of the castle is a farm . After the manor's house was rebuilt in 2008, the old house next to it, which probably dates back to the Middle Ages, was completely demolished. The farm is used for agriculture.
