The ZF Passau (formerly ZF Passau GmbH ) is a site of ZF Friedrichshafen and the guide site of the Industrial Technology Division. ZF Passau employs over 4,000 people in the Passau districts of Grubweg and Patriching and is one of the largest employers in Lower Bavaria .

Industrial Technology Division

In the Industrial Technology division, ZF bundles its activities for “off-road” applications. This includes the development and production of transmissions and axles for agricultural and construction machinery as well as drive technology for forklifts, rail and special vehicles. The division is also responsible for the global business in marine and aviation drive technology as well as the development and production of gearboxes for wind turbines and industrial drives . The division's portfolio also includes test systems for a wide variety of applications in drive and chassis technology. As the division's management location, Passau is responsible for around 10,500 employees at 21 locations worldwide. The Thyrnau plant , which belongs to the ZF E-Mobility division, is located near the Passau site .

history

On August 12, 1946, ZF Friedrichshafen founded ZF Passau GmbH at the location of the so-called Waldwerke, a "Reich-owned" company opened in 1943 for the production of tank gearboxes . The reason for choosing the remote location on the outskirts of Bavaria was the location in a bend in the Danube valley , where the forest works were protected from air raids during the war and the machinery was thus almost completely preserved. With 150 employees, the production of engines for tractors began in Passau.

In 1957, now with 3,000 employees, the product range was expanded to include axles and in 1966 gearboxes for construction machinery in order to become more independent from the agricultural vehicle market.

At the end of the 1970s, the location on the Danube became too small for the growing production and a second plant was built in the Passau district of Patriching, which went into operation on June 10, 1983. The newly created space enabled entry into the production of portal axles for low-floor buses , which enabled a low floor for stepless entry into city buses .

In 1985, ZF in Passau was given responsibility for the entire work machine drive technology division from the main plant in Friedrichshafen. Three years later it was decided to build another plant for car axle drives. After three years of construction, the gates were opened in the nearby Thyrnau in 2001.

Since August 2011, ZF Passau GmbH has been restructured into ZF Friedrichshafen AG .
